Basenji Links
Basenji
I
first read about the basenji a couple of years ago and was
curious about these little dogs that are barkless and meticulously
clean.
The curiosity got to me and I bought one. Instantly taken
with them, I decided to try to promote the breed, which
is not widely seen or known about. Most people I tell that
I have Basenjis say, "What's that?"
We are hoping to show our male, "Baroka" in obedience
this year.
About the Breed
The BASENJI may orginally have come from the Middle East,
but is regarded as a Central African (CONGO) derivation
from some three hundred years ago. That is the area from
which the breed was exported in the mid 1930's. The BASENJI
club of America was formed in 1942. The American Kennel
Club accepted the standards for the BASENJI in 1943, and
the breed became eligible for registration with 59 registered
within the first few months.
What is a Basenji
Sleek, short coat in dazzling red, lustrous black, tri-color,
and brindle, with red being the most common color. They
are a small compact dog averaging 16-17 inches tall and
weighing 20-25lbs. Their pricked ears and curly tail are
trademarks of the deer-like Basenji. The Basenji's short
close fitting coat is sleek and is reowned for being odor
free. The Basenji has a tendency to carry out his own grooming
in the manner of a cat.
This dog attracts a small but enthusiastic following with
his gentle friendly attitude. He has a questioning look
on his wedge-shaped face and a wrinkled brow: his curiosity
is a real feature of his temperment. He is known for the
unusual fact that he doesn't bark but has a yodel-type cry.
Alert, affectionate, energetic and curious, the Basenji
loves to play and makes a great pet. They are very intelligent
and respond well to training.
