Chinese Crested Links

About the Breed

The Chinese Crested is by far the most popular of the hairless breed of dog, and was known in early times. If you are looking for a novelty, this may be just the pet for you, but choose a Chinese Crested only if you are ready to return the affection this dainty little creature is so eager to give.

Description:

There are two distinct varieties of this unusual dog: one is the hairless, Except for its head, feet, and tail, and called not surprisingly, the Hairless; the other, the Powderpuff, has a coat of long, soft hair. Both come in numerous colors, solid or mixed, or all over spotted. Oddly, the two types often occur in the same litter.

Temperament:

Chinese Cresteds tend to become very attached to their owners and have difficulty adjusting to new ones. The Crested should never be vicious or aggressive, however they can be apprehensive of strangers, and rather aloof in their manner. This should not be confused .with timidity or aggression. They crave constant companionship. They are lively, gentle and devoted little dog that will steel your heart

Grooming and Care:

Daily combing and brushing of the long, fine, double coat of the Powerpuff would be ideal especially when shedding. The undercoat can become matted if neglected. Bathe the hairless frequently and massage a little oil or cream into the skin to keep it supple. No special feeding requirements, but don't over feed this dog as they can become obese if given the chance. they should not be given bones to chew with out supervision as they often have an incomplete set of teeth. Skin of the Hairless reacts to wool ,and most be protected from sunburn if outside for long periods in the summer. (sunscreen) They also must be protected in the winter months from the cold with a sweater or doggy coat.
